Deep green, velvety leaves with striking white veins that seem to glow against the dark surface. The Green Velvet is one of the more compact Alocasias, which makes it far more manageable than its larger cousins without sacrificing any of the drama. It has a jewel-like quality that makes it a favourite among collectors and a genuinely special gift for anyone who loves plants that feel a little extraordinary.
CARE GUIDE
+ POSITION / LIGHT: Bright indirect light is essential. Too little light and growth stalls; too much direct sun and those beautiful velvety leaves will scorch and fade.
+ WATERING: Allow the top 2–3cm of soil to dry out between waterings. Alocasias are sensitive to both overwatering and underwatering. Well draining soil and a pot with good drainage are a must.
+ TEMPERATURE: Happiest between 18–27°C. Keep away from cold drafts, air conditioning and temperatures below 15°C. This one feels the cold quickly.
+ FERTILISER: Feed once a month through spring and summer with a diluted balanced liquid fertiliser. Reduce or stop feeding over winter when growth slows.
+ GROWTH RATE: Moderate. Produces new leaves steadily through the warmer months, each one unfurling slowly and dramatically from the centre of the plant.
+ PET FRIENDLY: No, toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Keep out of reach.
FAQ'S
1. My Alocasia is dropping leaves. What's happening? Alocasias drop leaves in response to stress, whether from overwatering, underwatering, low light, cold drafts or a change in environment. Identify the most likely cause, adjust conditions, and new growth should follow once the plant settles.
2. The leaves are losing their velvety texture and looking dull. Why? Low humidity is usually the cause. The Green Velvet loves moisture in the air. A humidifier nearby or grouping with other plants will help restore that characteristic soft sheen.
3. Can I propagate it? Yes. Divide offsets or corms from the base of the plant during repotting. Pot each one up separately in fresh well draining mix and keep warm and humid while they establish.
