Huge, velvety, heart-shaped leaves with bright white veins that feel as good as they look. The Gloriosum is a slow-growing ground creeper that commands attention without trying, each new leaf unfurling larger than the last. It's the kind of plant that stops people mid-conversation. A real showpiece for anyone who appreciates something a little out of the ordinary.
CARE GUIDE
+ POSITION / LIGHT: Bright indirect light is ideal. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the velvety leaf surface and fade the contrast of those striking veins.
+ WATERING: Allow the top 2–3cm of soil to dry out between waterings. Good drainage is essential. This one is sensitive to overwatering and appreciates a well aerated potting mix.
+ TEMPERATURE: Happiest between 18–27°C. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C.
+ FERTILISER: Feed once a month through spring and summer with a diluted balanced liquid fertiliser. Reduce over autumn and winter.
+ GROWTH RATE: Slow. This is not a plant in a hurry, but every new leaf is an event worth waiting for.
+ PET FRIENDLY: No, toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Keep out of reach.
FAQ'S
1. The edges of my leaves are turning brown. What's causing it? Low humidity is the most common culprit. The Gloriosum loves moisture in the air. Try a humidifier nearby, or group it with other plants to create a more humid microclimate.
2. Can I propagate it? Yes. Take a stem cutting with at least one node and place it in moist sphagnum moss or a well draining potting mix. Keep it warm and humid while it roots. It takes time but it gets there.
3. Why is my Gloriosum growing sideways along the soil rather than upward? That's exactly what it's meant to do. The Gloriosum is a terrestrial creeper by nature. You can guide the rhizome along the surface of the pot or into a wider container as it grows.
