Broad, glossy leaves in deep burgundy and olive green that shift in colour depending on the light. The Congo Apple is a bold, upright Philodendron that grows as a compact clump rather than trailing or climbing, making it one of the more versatile statement plants around. It looks equally at home in a living room corner, a home office, or a cafe. Low maintenance, high impact, and genuinely hard to walk past without stopping.
CARE GUIDE
+ POSITION / LIGHT: Bright indirect light brings out the best leaf colour. Tolerates lower light but growth will slow and the rich burgundy tones may fade.
+ WATERING: Allow the top 2–3cm of soil to dry out between waterings. Water thoroughly and allow to drain fully before watering again.
+ TEMPERATURE: Happiest between 18–27°C. Keep away from cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C.
+ FERTILISER: Feed once a month through spring and summer with a diluted balanced liquid fertiliser. Reduce or stop feeding over winter.
+ GROWTH RATE: Moderate. Produces new leaves steadily through the warmer months, each one unfurling from a central stem.
+ PET FRIENDLY: No, toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Keep out of reach.
FAQ'S
1. The new leaves are coming through very pale. What's wrong? Usually a sign the plant needs feeding. Try a balanced liquid fertiliser once a month through spring and summer and new growth should come through with better colour.
2. Can I propagate it? Yes. Stem cuttings with at least one node can be rooted in water or moist soil. Keep warm and in bright indirect light while establishing.
3. The leaves are developing brown patches. What's causing it? Most likely too much direct sun scorching the leaf surface. Move it to a spot with gentler indirect light and avoid harsh afternoon sun coming through a west facing window.
