Round, coin-shaped leaves on long delicate stems that seem to float in the air. The Pilea Peperomioides has a playful, sculptural quality that makes it one of the most photographed houseplants around, and for good reason. It grows quickly, produces little offshoots generously, and fits just as happily on a windowsill as it does on a dining table. One of those plants that brings a smile every time you walk past it.
CARE GUIDE
+ POSITION / LIGHT: Bright indirect light is ideal. Rotate the pot regularly to keep growth even, as it naturally leans toward the light source.
+ WATERING: Allow the top 2–3cm of soil to dry out between waterings. Well draining soil and a pot with drainage holes are a must for this one.
+ TEMPERATURE: Happiest between 13–30°C. Tolerates cooler temperatures better than most, but keep away from frost.
+ FERTILISER: Feed once a month through spring and summer with a diluted balanced liquid fertiliser. No feeding needed over winter.
+ GROWTH RATE: Moderate to fast. Produces new leaves regularly through the warmer months, along with small offshoots from the base.
+ PET FRIENDLY: Yes, non-toxic to cats and dogs. 🐾
FAQ'S
1. The leaves are curling under. What's wrong? Usually underwatering or too much direct sun. Give it a thorough drink and move it out of any harsh light.
2. Can I propagate the offshoots? Yes, and it's one of the most satisfying propagations going. Wait until the offshoot is a few centimetres tall, separate it from the mother plant with a clean cut, and pot it up in fresh soil.
3. My plant is leaning to one side. Is that normal?
Completely normal. The Pilea grows toward its light source. Give it a quarter turn every week or so and it will straighten out over time.
