Chinese Money Plant 怰ļø Care Guide

Ā POSITION / LIGHT: Thrives in bright, indirect light. A little morning sun is fine, but harsh direct sunlight can scorch those round leaves. Rotate it regularly to keep the shape even, as it tends to lean toward the light.

Ā  WATERING: Water when the top 2–3cm of soil feels dry. Pileas like a consistent routine but hate soggy soil—make sure your pot has good drainage.

Ā  TEMPERATURE: Loves warm indoor temps between 18–26°C. Avoid cold drafts and super dry air (hello, heater season!).

Ā  FERTILISER: Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Regular feeding helps boost leaf colour and fullness.

Ā  GROWTH RATE: Moderate. With the right light and care, it grows steadily and produces pups that can be potted up or shared with friends.

Ā  PET FRIENDLY? Yes! The Chinese Money Plant is non-toxic to pets and people—so it’s safe for every member of the household.

FAQ'S 怰ļø

Is Pilea a type of succulent?

Not quite. Pilea is not a succulent, but it does have fleshy leaves that store some water, making it more drought-tolerant than your average houseplant. Still, it prefers regular watering and doesn’t enjoy drying out completely like a true succulent.

Why is the Pilea called a Chinese Money Plant?

The name comes from the shape of its leaves — they resemble little green coins! It’s also associated with good fortune and prosperity in Chinese culture, which only adds to its charm.

Why are the leaves on my Pilea plant turning brown and falling off?

Usually a sign of overwatering, underwatering, or low humidity. Check the soil moisture, and make sure your plant isn’t sitting too close to a heater or draft. Brown edges may also signal too much direct sun.

Should I bottom water my Chinese Money Plant?

Yes, you can! Bottom watering encourages healthy root growth and avoids splashing the sensitive leaves. Just make sure to let it soak up water for about 20–30 minutes, then discard any excess.
