Long, wavy-edged fronds that unfurl from a central rosette like a slow, satisfying reveal. The Antiquum is a softer, more elegant variety of the classic Bird's Nest Fern, with glossy mid-green leaves that have a gentle ripple along the edges. It loves humidity, thrives in lower light, and brings a lush, layered texture to bathrooms, shelves and shaded corners. One of those plants that makes a space feel genuinely alive.
CARE GUIDE
+ POSITION / LIGHT: Low to bright indirect light. One of the better performers in shadier spots, making it ideal for bathrooms and rooms with limited natural light.
+ WATERING: Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Water around the edges of the pot rather than into the central rosette, which can cause rot if water sits in it.
+ TEMPERATURE: Happiest between 18–27°C. Sensitive to cold, keep away from drafts and temperatures below 13°C.
+ FERTILISER: Feed once a month through spring and summer with a diluted balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength. Less is more with ferns.
+ GROWTH RATE: Moderate. New fronds emerge slowly from the centre, unfurling over several weeks into full, graceful leaves.
+ PET FRIENDLY: Yes, non-toxic to cats and dogs. 🐾
FAQ'S
1. The fronds on my Bird's Nest Fern are going brown and crispy. What's wrong? Low humidity or underwatering is usually the cause. Ferns love moisture in the air as much as in the soil. A bathroom spot, regular misting, or a humidifier nearby will make a real difference.
2. Can I propagate it? Bird's Nest Ferns propagate through spores rather than cuttings, which makes home propagation tricky. The easiest way to get more is to purchase a new plant or divide a mature one carefully at repotting time.
3. Why are new fronds emerging misshapen or stunted? Touching or disturbing the new growth as it unfurls from the centre can cause misshaping. Try to avoid handling the emerging fronds and keep the plant in a stable spot away from high traffic areas.
