The Zygocactus is a vibrant bloomer with cascading stems and stunning trumpet-shaped flowers in shades of pink, red, white, or purple. Unlike desert cacti, this beauty is native to tropical forests and prefers a bit of humidity and TLC. Its segmented, leaf-like stems and seasonal colour bursts make it a festive favourite year-round.

Zygocactus 〰️ Care Guide

POSITION / LIGHT: Loves bright, indirect light. Too much sun can cause sunburn on the leaves, while too little light may prevent blooming. East-facing windows are ideal.

WATERING: Water when the top few centimetres of soil feels dry. Keep it slightly moist during the growing and blooming seasons, but let it dry out more between waterings in winter. Avoid overwatering—this cactus doesn’t like wet feet!

TEMPERATURE: Happy in temps between 15–24°C. Cooler nights can actually help trigger blooms, but protect from frost and extreme heat.

FERTILISER: Feed monthly from spring through early autumn. Stop feeding once buds appear to avoid interfering with blooming.

GROWTH RATE: Moderate. This cactus fills out nicely over time and can live for decades with the right care - often becoming a passed-down plant heirloom!

PET FRIENDLY? Yes! Zygocactus is non-toxic to pets and humans, so it’s a safe addition to any household.

FAQ'S 〰️

How do I get my Zygocactus to bloom?

To encourage blooming, reduce watering slightly and expose it to cooler temps (around 10–15°C) and long nights (12–14 hours of darkness) for a few weeks in early autumn. Once buds form, resume regular care and avoid moving it - buds can drop if the plant is stressed!

Should I deadhead Zygocactus?

Yes! While not strictly necessary, removing spent blooms can tidy the plant and help redirect energy to healthy growth. Simply pinch off the faded flowers once they start to wither.

Do Zygocactus like to be root bound?

Yes, a bit! They actually bloom better when slightly root bound. You only need to repot every 2–3 years or when the roots are bursting out of the pot.

Can you divide Zygocactus?

Absolutely. You can propagate by gently twisting off a few healthy stem segments, letting them callous for a day or two, and then planting them in moist, well-draining soil. It’s an easy way to share or expand your collection!
