The Variegated Wax Hoya (Hoya Carnosa ‘Tricolor’) is a dazzling twist on the classic wax plant. With lush, waxy leaves splashed in shades of cream, pink, and green, it’s a variegated beauty that effortlessly steals the show. As a bonus, it can bloom with clusters of fragrant, star-shaped flowers that look almost too perfect to be real. Whether climbing up a trellis or cascading from a hanging pot, this Hoya brings a pop of colour and elegance to any space.
Variegated Wax Hoya 〰️ Care Guide
POSITION / LIGHT: Loves bright, indirect light to maintain its vibrant variegation. Some morning sun is great, but avoid harsh midday rays which can scorch the leaves. Low light can cause the pink tones to fade.
WATERING: Let the top 3–5cm of soil dry out between waterings. It’s better to underwater than overdo it—Hoyas store moisture in their thick, succulent-like leaves. Water sparingly in winter.
TEMPERATURE: Thrives in warm temps between 18–28°C. Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature changes. Loves a bit of humidity, but can tolerate average indoor conditions.
FERTILISER: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a diluted, balanced fertiliser. Use a bloom booster if you’re chasing flowers. No need to feed during winter dormancy.
GROWTH RATE: Moderate to fast. With good care, it can trail or climb several meters. Pruning helps maintain a compact and bushy appearance.
PET FRIENDLY? Yes! Hoya Carnosa ‘Tricolor’ is non-toxic to pets and people, making it a safe choice for households with curious companions.
FAQ'S 〰️
Why is my Hoya dying?
Common causes include overwatering, underwatering, or insufficient light. Soft, yellowing leaves typically indicate too much water, while crispy, brown edges suggest too little. Make sure it’s in well-draining soil and receiving bright, indirect light.
Does Hoya Carnosa like to be root bound?
Yes! Hoyas actually prefer being a bit root bound and will often bloom more when slightly snug in their pots. Repot only when the roots are clearly outgrowing the container.
How do I get my Hoya to flower?
Bright light is essential—ideally some morning sun. Consistent care, minimal disturbance, and a little stress (like being slightly root bound) can encourage blooms. Feed with a phosphorus-rich fertiliser during the growing season to boost flowering.
