The Rope Hoya is a vintage fave making a big comeback—and for good reason! With thick, waxy leaves that grow on cascading vines, it brings a bold, sculptural vibe to any space. And the best part? When happy, it rewards you with clusters of sweetly scented, star-shaped flowers that look like they’re made of porcelain. Whether trailing from a pot or climbing a trellis, this beauty is equal parts tough and show-stopping.

Rope Hoya 怰ļø Care Guide

Ā POSITION / LIGHT: Loves bright, indirect light. Morning sun is welcome, but avoid harsh afternoon rays. Too little light means no blooms—so let it soak up those rays.

Ā  WATERING: Let the top 3–5cm of soil dry out before watering. Hoya Carnosa likes a ā€œdrink and dryā€ routine and hates soggy roots. In winter, water less frequently.

Ā  TEMPERATURE: Happy between 18–28°C. Keep it away from cold drafts and drying heaters for best results.

Ā  FERTILISER: Feed every 4 to 6 weeks during spring and summer. No need to feed in winter when growth slows.

Ā  GROWTH RATE: Moderate. Can take time to settle in but once it’s happy, it grows steadily and can reach impressive lengths.

Ā  PET FRIENDLY? Yes! Hoya Carnosa is non-toxic to pets and humans.

FAQ'S 怰ļø

Do Rope Hoyas like to be root bound?

Yes, they do! Hoya Carnosa actually blooms better when slightly root bound. No rush to repot unless roots are bursting out of the drainage holes.

How many times a year do Hoyas bloom?

Typically once or twice a year, often in late spring or summer. Flowering depends on light, age, and general plant happiness—more sun equals more blooms!

Do you water Hoya Compacta from top or bottom?

Either works, as long as the soil is well-draining. Top watering is easiest, but bottom watering can be helpful if the soil is pulling away from the edges. Just be sure to empty any excess water from the saucer.

How do you tell if a Hoya is overwatered?

Soft, yellowing leaves and blackened stems are a red flag. Hoyas store water in their thick leaves, so too much water = root rot. Always let the soil dry out between drinks.
