The Rhipsalis erythrocarpa 'Red Coral' is a quirky, eye-catching epiphytic cactus with long, thin, cylindrical stems that cascade elegantly, creating a tangled, coral-like appearance. Native to tropical forests, this unique cactus is a far cry from the typical spiky desert variety. Instead, it has soft, arching tendrils that can turn a striking red when exposed to bright light. During blooming, it produces small white flowers followed by vibrant red berries, adding to its charm and intrigue.
Rhipsalis 'Red Coral' 〰️ Care Guide
POSITION / LIGHT: Thrives in bright, indirect light. Prefers filtered sunlight or dappled shade. Too much direct sun can scorch the stems, while too little light may result in pale, leggy growth.
WATERING: Keep the soil lightly moist, especially during the growing season. Water when the top 2–3cm of soil feels dry. Reduce watering in winter but never let the soil dry out completely. Loves occasional misting for added humidity.
TEMPERATURE: Prefers warm temperatures between 18–26°C. Protect from frost and sudden temperature changes. Loves humidity—perfect for bathrooms or kitchens.
FERTILISER: Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a diluted cactus or succulent fertiliser. Skip feeding in winter when growth slows.
GROWTH RATE: Moderate to fast. As it matures, it forms long, trailing stems that can cascade over a metre, making it ideal for hanging pots or high shelves.
PET FRIENDLY? Yes! Rhipsalis 'Red Coral' is non-toxic to pets and humans, so it’s safe to hang around your furry friends.
FAQ'S 〰️
Why is my Rhipsalis dying?
Common issues include overwatering, lack of humidity, or too much direct sunlight. If the stems are yellowing, wilting, or drying out, check your watering routine and light exposure. Root rot from waterlogged soil is also a possibility—ensure proper drainage.
Is Rhipsalis a cactus?
Yes, but it’s an epiphytic cactus, native to tropical forests rather than arid deserts. It thrives in humid conditions and dappled light, unlike most traditional cacti. Its unique structure and softer stems set it apart from its spikier cousins.
