The Rabbit’s Foot Fern is a quirky and charming houseplant, loved for its delicate green fronds and fuzzy, foot-like rhizomes that creep over the surface of its pot - hence the name! These soft, furry "rabbit feet" not only add visual interest but also absorb moisture and nutrients. Native to Fiji, this fern is a unique addition to any indoor jungle and thrives in homes that offer a bit of warmth and humidity. It’s a conversation starter and a must-have for fern lovers.
Rabbit's Foot Fern 〰️ Care Guide
POSITION / LIGHT: Prefers bright, indirect light. Too much direct sun can scorch the fronds, while too little light may cause it to become leggy or sparse. Ideal for bathrooms, kitchens, or bright rooms out of the sun's direct path.
WATERING: Keep the soil lightly moist but never soggy. Water when the top 2–3cm of soil is dry. Be sure to water the soil, not the furry rhizomes, to prevent rot. Increase humidity during warmer months or in dry indoor climates.
TEMPERATURE: Thrives in temperatures between 16–24°C. Protect from cold drafts and sudden temperature drops. Loves humidity, so misting or placing near a humidifier is beneficial.
FERTILISER: Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a half-strength, balanced liquid fertiliser. Avoid overfeeding, especially in cooler months.
GROWTH RATE: Moderate. With the right care, it fills out beautifully over time, with both fronds and rhizomes expanding across and over its pot.
PET FRIENDLY? Yes! Rabbit’s Foot Fern is non-toxic to pets and people, making it a great choice for households with curious cats and dogs.
FAQ'S 〰️
Are Rabbit’s Foot Ferns fast growing?
They grow at a moderate pace. With consistent moisture, bright indirect light, and a bit of humidity, you’ll see steady growth in both the fronds and the fuzzy rhizomes.
Does Rabbit Foot Fern like to be root bound?
Yes, a little snug is fine! These ferns actually perform well when slightly root bound, and their rhizomes enjoy creeping over the sides of the pot. Repot only every couple of years or when it’s truly outgrowing its space.
What is the best container for a Rabbit Foot Fern?
A shallow, wide container works best to allow the rhizomes to sprawl over the edges. Make sure it has good drainage, as the fern dislikes sitting in soggy soil. Hanging baskets or decorative pots with exposed sides are perfect to show off those furry feet!
