The Hoya Carnosa ‘Snowball’ is a striking variant of the classic wax plant, renowned for its clusters of pure white, star-shaped flowers that resemble little snowballs. The lush, waxy green leaves are thick and semi-succulent, providing a glossy backdrop to the stunning blooms. This hardy, low-maintenance plant can trail or climb, adding a touch of tropical elegance to any space. It’s beloved for its sweetly scented flowers that can appear multiple times a year when properly cared for.

Hoya Carnosa ‘Snowball’ 〰️ Care Guide

POSITION / LIGHT: Thrives in bright, indirect light. Morning sun is beneficial, but harsh afternoon rays can scorch the leaves. Low light may result in reduced flowering and slower growth.

WATERING: Let the top 3–5cm of soil dry out between waterings. As a semi-succulent, it stores water in its leaves and prefers to stay on the drier side. Water less frequently in winter, allowing the soil to dry out more thoroughly.

TEMPERATURE: Prefers warm temperatures between 18–28°C. Protect from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes. Loves moderate to high humidity.

FERTILISER: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser. Use a bloom-boosting fertiliser if aiming for more flowers. Skip feeding during winter dormancy.

GROWTH RATE: Slow to moderate. This little plant stays neat and compact but will bush out nicely with good light and the occasional prune.

PET FRIENDLY? Yes! Hoya Carnosa ‘Snowball’ is non-toxic to pets and humans, making it a safe and attractive addition to any household.

FAQ'S 〰️

Do Rope Hoyas like to be root bound?

Yes, they do! Hoya Carnosa varieties, including ‘Snowball’, prefer being slightly root bound. Keeping them a bit snug in their pot encourages blooming. Only repot when the roots are clearly overcrowding the pot.

How many times a year do Hoyas bloom?

Typically once or twice a year, usually in spring or summer. With the right light and care, some mature Hoyas may bloom more frequently. Bright, indirect light and consistent care are key to encouraging flowers.

Do you water Hoya Carnosa from top or bottom?

Either method works. Top watering is more common and helps wash away salts, while bottom watering ensures the roots are evenly soaked. Just make sure any excess water drains away to prevent root rot.

How do you tell if a Hoya is overwatered?

Overwatering signs include yellowing, mushy leaves, and blackened stems. The plant may also appear wilted despite moist soil. Check for soggy soil or an unpleasant, musty smell from the roots—these are sure signs of rot.
