The Furry Feather Calathea, also known as Calathea rufibarba, is as soft and elegant as its name suggests. Its long, slender, wavy-edged leaves are deep green on top with rich burgundy undersides - and the stems and undersides are covered in fine, velvety ā€œfur.ā€ This lush, tactile texture gives it a unique charm among tropical houseplants. Perfect for adding drama and depth to your indoor plant collection, it’s a standout for both look and feel.

Furry Feather Calathea (Rufibarba) 怰ļø Care Guide

Ā POSITION / LIGHT: Thrives in bright, indirect light. Can tolerate lower light but avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaves and fade their colour.

Ā  WATERING: Keep the soil consistently lightly moist but not soggy. Water when the top 2–3cm of soil feels dry. Use filtered or rainwater if possible, as Calatheas are sensitive to chemicals in tap water.

Ā  TEMPERATURE: Prefers warm, stable temps between 18–26°C. Keep away from cold drafts and heating vents. Loves a humid environment - ideal for bathrooms or paired with a humidifier.

Ā  FERTILISER: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser. No need to fertilise during winter.

GROWTH RATE: Moderate grower. Can reach around 50–70cm in height and spread when happy.

Ā  PET FRIENDLY? Yes! Calatheas, including the rufibarba, are non-toxic to pets and safe to have around furry friends.

FAQ'S 怰ļø

Should I mist my Calathea every day?

Daily misting can help with humidity, especially in dry indoor environments. However, it’s best to combine misting with other methods like using a humidifier or pebble tray for more consistent moisture.

Why are the leaves on my Calathea rufibarba turning yellow?

Yellowing leaves often point to overwatering or poor drainage. Make sure the plant isn’t sitting in water, and allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly before watering again.

Should I cut the brown tips off my Calathea?

Yes, trimming brown tips is totally fine and won’t harm the plant. Use clean scissors and cut just the browned edges. Brown tips are often a sign of low humidity or water quality issues.
